On Sunday, Germany and Spain were able to draw 1-1, complicating the standings in Group E going into the last round of games.
Germany got a draw thanks to a close-range goal from substitute Niklas Volkrug near the conclusion of the second half, keeping the group race open.
After a low cross from Jordi Alba in the 62nd minute, Alvaro Morata outperformed his defender to deflect the ball into goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's net from close range and give the Spanish team the lead.
With a strong shot from within the penalty box, Volkrug nevertheless equalized in the 83rd minute.
Spain is in first place in the standings with four points and needs only a draw against Japan in its final game to secure qualification. A win for the Spanish team will guarantee qualification at the top of the group.
Germany is last in the standings with just one point after losing to Japan 2-1 in their opening match.
On Thursday, the Manshafts must defeat Costa Rica while they watch for Japan to stumble.
And if Japan tied, the outcome would depend on the goals scored by Germany and Japan relative to each other.
