Biden: The Israel-Lebanon agreement is historic and paves the way for stability in the region
On Thursday evening, US President Joseph Biden followed up on the maritime border demarcation agreement that was signed between Israel and Lebanon today
"I am proud to congratulate Israel and Lebanon on formally concluding an agreement to resolve their longstanding maritime border dispute," Biden said in a statement
He added: "The two parties in Naqoura in Lebanon today have taken the last steps to implement the agreement and submitted the final documents to the United Nations in the presence of the United States
Biden continued, "As I said when announcing this historic agreement, it will secure the interests of both Israel and Lebanon and pave the way for greater stability and prosperity in the region
He stressed that the United States will continue to act as a mediator as the two parties work to fulfill their obligations and implement this agreement
And Biden added: “Energy should not be a cause of conflict, especially in the eastern Mediterranean, but rather it should be a tool for cooperation, stability, security and
prosperity
He concluded: "This agreement brings us closer to achieving a vision for a more secure, integrated and prosperous Middle East that provides benefits to all the peoples of the region
